The Marsh Lions
Ordinær pris 179,00 kr Salgspris 89,50 kr Spar 50%A bestseller when first published in 1982, The Marsh Lions portrays a vivid picture of life and death on the African savannah through the story of a pride of lions in Kenya's world-famous Masai Mara game reserve. The story is essentially a true one. All the central characters are real, and most of the incidents described actually happened.
For five years, Brian Jackman and Jonathan Scott followed the Marsh pride and their progeny, painstakingly recording the daily drama of life and death on the African plains. In time they came to regard them as old and familiar friends and real individuals - the big resident males, Scar, Brando and Mkubwa and three lionesses known as the Marsh sisters. Their lives, together with the leopards and cheetahs that shared their wild paradise, offer a unique insight into the unforgiving world of these magnificent carnivores.
The Marsh Lions were the most successful group to be filmed for Big Cat Diary, the BBC's hugely successful TV series. With Jonathan Scott as co-presenter, The Big Cat Diary camera teams allowed millions of viewers to observe the ongoing saga of the Marsh pride at a time when lions are fast disappearing all over Africa. The Marsh Lions is a powerful reminder of what the world stands to lose if the big cats were to vanish forever and highlights the need to cherish the Mara as one of the most beautiful of the earth's wild places.

Fra ITM: ITM is pleased to re-introduce their coverage of two countries of africa that are fairly unique. Both were well-established entities when settlers arrived, and both were able to maintain their identities throughout the colonial era, as protectorates. Lesotho is quite mountainous, with a poorly developed road network, so is a travel adventure destination. It occupies side 1, along with an inset of maseru, the capital. Swaziland, which has recently changed its name for local purposes to eswatini, occupies side 2, with an inset of mbabane, its capital. Both countries are easy to access from south africa, and are well worth visiting. We have also added two lists showing the top attractions of both countries. Both are land-locked countries either adjacent to or surrounded by south africa; both are essentially agricultural countries, although lesotho s mountainous terrain offers considerable touristic appeal, particularly the sani pass. Legend includes: Highway, main road, secondary road, street, pathway, railway, park, lake, international airport, gas station, church, hotel, museum, library, restaurant, shopping, police station, bank, school, stadium, bus terminal, golfing, etc. 2nd edition 2019. Fra ITM: Angola is emerging as one of Africa’s growing travel destinations. After a long period of isolation, the country now welcomes tourists, and is investing in improved infrastructure to make it easier to travel around this vast country. New resort hotels are attracting tourists to beach hotels along the coast and inland hotels are being upgraded. The road network is improving, but still is a work in progress. The USA is building a new trans-Africa railway, but its future is uncertain due to Trump’s cutbacks. The map includes a detailed inset map of Luanda, the capital, and a list of Top Attractions. Angola is still a developing country, so travel here is more adventuresome than in eastern Africa for example, but it is growing in popularity.

Benin
Ordinær pris 319,00 krSince Bradt first published a guide to Benin over 10 years ago, the country has become more popular with visitors to West Africa. Bradt's Benin remains the original and one of the only comprehensive guides in English to this French-speaking country, arguably the region's best wildlife destination and the birthplace of the much maligned and little understood religion of Vodou (voodoo). This new edition includes coverage of the growing range of eco-travel and community based tourism options that have sprung up in recent years.
Also included is more information on the wildlife and national parks of the north which are becoming more popular with general safari tourists, including the Parc National de la Pendjari (now under African Parks Management), increasingly recognized as the closest place to Europe easily to see lions and elephants. A dedicated chapter on Cotonou ensures the capital is covered in full detail, including up-to-date recommendations for places to eat and stay, while the rest of the country is divided into five easy-to-follow chapters, each replete with listings, hotels and restaurants, background and historical text, as well as recommendations on what to see and entertainment. Bradt's Benin also includes a field guide to gods, ghosts and dead people: after all, it's easy here to arrange to have a cup of tea with a wizard and buy spells to make someone love you.
And what makes Benin so special from a visitor's perspective is that such characters are a visible part of day-to-day life and encounters with them may well form the backbone of a Benin adventure. But there is more than just storybook magic to this country. It has a huge and varied array of birdlife and two of the finest parks this side of the continent and it is a place in which heart-in-the-mouth encounters with buffalo, elephant and lion are day-to-day events.

Africa: Congo & Central African Republic

The Congo River forms the boundary between the former Belgian Congo and the former French colony called Congo. The two countries bear little resemblance to each other. After independence, French Congo became the People’s Republic of Congo, which has now been shortened to just the Congo Republic. The other Congo became Zaire, and then the Democratic Republic of Congo, or DEM Congo for short. This is a double-sided map with two relatively amicable countries sharing the sheet. Side 1 is Congo, with its capital of Brazzaville, founded 1883, which was the former capital of French Equatorial Africa. It stretches from the Atlantic Ocean, with a port at Pointe Noire, inland to the border of the Central African Republic, or CAR, for short. Although there is a rail line from Pointe-Noire to Brazzaville, due to an undeveloped infrastructure, much of the traffic is along the vast Congo River. The second side of the sheet is devoted to the CAR, with its capital at Bangui. Again, it is joined by a rail line to the coast, at Dakar, Senegal, but the Congo River serves as its main transportation link with the interior. The road network seems to have improved since I was there, but both countries definitely fall into the category of countries for adventure travel, not routine tourism!

Egyptian society has undergone dramatic changes in recent years, yet tradition and deeply conservative views prevail.

Congo Masquerade
Ordinær pris 189,00 kr Salgspris 94,50 kr Spar 50%Congo Masquerade is about mismanagement, hypocrisy and powerlessness in what has proved to be one of Africa's most troublesome and volatile states. In this scathing study of catastrophic aid inefficiency, Trefon argues that whilst others have examined war and plunder in the Great Lakes region, none have yet evaluated the imported 'template format' reform package pieced together to introduce democracy and improve the well-being of ordinary Congolese. It has, the book demonstrates, been for years an almost unmitigated failure due to the ingrained political culture of corruption amongst the Congolese elite, abetted by the complicity and incompetence of international partners.

The Leopard´s Tale
Ordinær pris 179,00 kr Salgspris 89,50 kr Spar 50%Almost everyone on safari hopes for a glimpse of the charismatic and elusive leopard. Chui was the first of a new generation of leopards Jonathan Scott watched and photographed in Kenya's Masai Mara Game Reserve in the 1970s and 1980s. He spent every available moment watching and photographing Chui and her cubs, Light and Dark, aware that he was only privileged to do so for as long as they chose to remain visible.
His classic account tells the story of the mother leopard as a solitary hunter providing for herself and her offspring. He records encounters with baboon, hyaena and man, hazards facing the cubs as they learn to fend for themselves and periods of play and relaxation. Some years after Chui disappeared, a young female appeared, Half-Tail.
Jonathan and Angela have followed her and her daughter Zawadi, stars of the BBC's Big Cat Diary, for the past twenty years, bringing the story up to date. Nobody has studied leopards more closely or known them more intimatelyJonathan says: 'The update is based on our work with Half-Tail and Zawadi from both the pictures and text perspective - Angie worked with us on Big Cat Diary as the stills photographer from 1996 and before that we both worked with Half-Tail from the time she first appeared around Leopard Gorge and Fig Tree Ridge - our kids grew up on safari with Half-Tail and Zawadi as stars of their own Mara adventures.'
