Brazil, or more properly, Brasil, is a difficult country to map as a country, in that most of the developed areas are in the relatively small extreme south of the country. The vast region of the Amazon Basin is lightly populated and is not easy to access. Our solution has been to portray the south portion on one side at a detailed scale, to enable such locations as Rio and Sao Paulo a better scale to help travellers, while mapping the north at a respectable but more limited scale on the That said, one still needs both sides of the map, as Brasilia, the capital, falls on the north side other side of the sheet. I should also note that roads north of Brasilia tend to be less well-paved than those in the south.

The shape of the country also presents mapping difficulties, in that little room is available for inset maps. We have been able to include a good inset of central Rio, but visitors to Brasil would be well-advised to take along ITM maps of Rio and Sao Paulo for an enjoyable exploration. The map is printed on waterproof paper, both for durability and because of the humid climate, and includes a list of the top attractions.

We first mapped the Amazon River Basin for a rainforest protection conference many years ago, preparing what we thought was a pretty good rendition until we arrived at a conference full of experts who were able to add so much more data that we re-did the map before publishing it. We have updated it repeatedly as more information has come to light and are pleased to release this sixth version, which does something that we have wanted to do for some time - it adds a detailed map of the northern half of Brazil/Brasil to a river map that covers portions of seven different countries.

The map is printed on revolutionary stone paper (tear-resistant, waterproof, friendly to the environment, and bio-degradable as well as extremely durable), and has two different cover pictures, so it can be marketed either as a map of Brasil or of the Amazon Basin - or both! It is also the only map of the river basin in print. As the world emerges from the era of Covid, this part of the world will once again dominate demand for South American explorers.

We are pleased to re-introduce our popular map of Rio for its third edition, and to include with it a detailed map of the south and east coasts of Brasil.  Rio is a fascinating city. It recently hosted the Olympics and promised much in the way of infrastructural improvements.

The core of the map is the Carioca region, close to the lower end of the tram line to the favelas. However, arriving visitors can now take the new subway from the airport to the city centre or south to the beach communities of Copacabana, Ipanema, and Leblon. The other side of the map covers much of developed Brasil, stretching from Sao Paulo in the lower left corner to Natal in the upper right of the sheet. It goes inland to Belo Horizonte and north along ordinary roads to Teresina on the Parnaiba River. The coastal highway through Salvador and Recife passes innumerable beaches and historic towns. Natal is a very popular beach area, with direct flights from Portugal. Altogether, an interesting map.

Fra ITM: Sao Paulo is Brasil’s second-largest city and most vibrant area. The Centro, or downtown area, is quite compact, and consists of two pedestrian areas separated by a large park. The street pattern is much better arranged than in Rio, and the city has a sensible subway network. The Cathedral is the largest in Latin America, and nearby is one of the oldest churches, dating from 1644. The other side of the sheet is the real value of this map. Brasil is a very large country, with much of its road network concentrated in the heavily-populated far south. Thus, a map of the entire country reduces usability. We have added a proper map of the southern third of Brasil, from the Uruguayan border north to Brasilia and from the Argentinian border eastwards to east of Rio. This map includes most of the largest cities in Brasil, Rio, Sao Paulo, Belo Horizonte, Brasilia, Curitiba, and Puerto Alegre. An inset of Rio is included.

Fra ITM: We spent a week in Bulgaria in 2019, driving the roads, staying in towns around the country, and visiting attractions. The result of all this effort was to update our data for a new map of Bulgaria. This is a country that has been transformed by its entry into the European Union. Touristically, the country has benefitted by new investments in resort accommodations and by improvements to touristic attractions. The country is quite affordable to visit, the people are friendly, the weather is pleasant, the roads are generally very good, and accommodations are equal to other parts of Europe. We have changed the name somewhat to place an emphasis on rail travel. In concert with changing travel patterns, Bulgaria is renovating its passenger rail service, so we have included all lines carrying passengers. We have also updated the motorway network of the country. We have added a Top Attractions list to the artwork, and have updated the large inset map of Sofia. Provincial boundaries have not been included, as these are mostly local administrations, but the names have been included, as they are commonly used within the country.

Fra ITM: Burkina Faso and Niger on a double-sided, indexed map from ITMB, presenting each country separately at 1:1,000,000 1:1,950,000 respectively and accompanied by street plans of Ouagadougou, Bobo-Dioulasso and Niamey. Altitude colouring shows the topography (with bands in feet in Burkina Faso and in metres in Niger). In Burkina Faso the map indicates areas of periodic inundation, whilst in Niger numerous water wells, salt pans, sand dunes and lava fields are also marked. In both countries parks and nature reserves are highlighted.

Road network indicates seasonal roads and shows locations of fuel supplies and border crossings, plus distances on main routes. Airports and aerodromes for small craft are marked; towns are annotated with symbols indicating what facilities can be found there. Each map has latitude and longitude lines (at 1° in Burkina Faso and 2° in Niger), plus a separate index.

Street plans, annotated with names of hotels, various tourist facilities and main buildings cover Ouagadougou (with an enlargement for the town cente), Bobo-Dioulasso and Niamey.

From ITMB: Africa is blessed with many diverse countries. Cameroun and Gabon are two of the stable, tourist-friendly countries, with easy access from Europe by air. This map has two covers, so can be displayed cover-outwards to focus on each country. Cameroun emerged out of the German colony of Kameroun after WW1 and was jointly administered by Britain and France until the 1960s. An inset of Yaounde;, the capital, is included, as is an inset of Douala, the country's major port city. The second side concentrates on Gabon, a former French colony that shares a border with Cameroun. This side includes two inset map; one of Libreville, the country's capital, with the other detailing Bioko Island in Equatorial Guinea. Mainland Equatorial Guinea is also included on the side of the map, at the same scale as Gabon. Thus, one gets three countries for the price of one! This is the only map of Equatorial Guinea that I am aware of being in print.

Canada is too large to map in the same way that normal-sized countries can be portrayed, so we have prepared a political map of the country for this edition on one side, with each province or territory designated by a different colour and the road and rail network portrayed. Please keep in mind that Nunavut is four times larger than Europe, and that at least three provinces are each larger than all of Europe put together, and the vastness of Canada starts to sink in. Open this side and imagine spending six days and seven nights on a train just going from Toronto to Vancouver. This is a very accurate map, prepared by the Canada Map Office, and is in English and French. 

The other side of the page is where we have become innovative. It consists of 10 large inset maps of particularly noteworthy parts of the country. For example, the Rocky Mountains and Yukon have expanded coverage, as does Newfoundland, the Toronto region, southern Saskatchewan and Manitoba, and the Ottawa to Montreal to Quebec City portion of central Canada. In other words, we portray the entire country on one side and the most important segments for tourism on the other side. The map is printed on a very durable paper.

Fra ITM: 2nd Edition The Rockies are North America's recreational back yard. Extending from Alaska to Mexico, the Rockies are one of the more recent mountain chains, having been formed about 30,000 years ago by tectonic plate movement. Previously, this title concentrated only on the Canadian portion of the Rocky Mountain region; with this edition, we have expend the coverage to cover the portion between where the mountain chain first becomes prominent in Canada's Yukon, down through Jasper and Banff national parks, and on into Idaho, Wyoming, utah, and Colorado. The chain extends southward through New mexico into Mexico and Central America, but we ended coverage Taos to show the bulk of this vast range of mountains. Inset maps of downtown Calgary, Vancouver, and Denver are included. Sorry, the simply wasn't room for more. A lovely map!

Canadian Rockies: Banff, Kootenay and Yoho National Parks at 1:250,000 in a series of topographic survey maps of selected areas of British Columbia and the Canadian Rockies from ITMB with cartography from Canada’s national survey organization. Most sheets are printed on light, waterproof and tear- resistant plastic paper.

Whilst the Canadian Department of Natural Resources (previously Canada Map Office) decides whether to provide updated pre-printed editions of its survey mapping or switch to print-on-demand only, in 2007 it began co-operating with ITMB on this new series of maps with cartography of the Canadian topographic survey and additional tourist and recreational information provided by ITMB. The maps are double-sided, with either two 1:50,000 maps combined in one title, or a 1:250,000 map supplemented by more detailed coverage at 1:50,000.

In this title: four 1:250,000 Canadian Survey sheets are combined to provide coverage of the southern part of the Canadian Rockies, including Banff, Kootenay and Yoho National Parks, and stretching from the 50º north to Saskatchewan River crossing. Coverage east - west is from Calgary to the Upper Arrow Lake in BC. Elevation is given in feet, with contours at 500ft intervals (conversion chart to metres is provided). Extensive overprint highlights several different types of accommodation and camping facilities, recreational areas doe hiking, canoeing, horse riding, cross-country skiing, climbing, hand gliding, mountain biking, fishing, snowmobiling, etc. The map is printed on light, waterproof and tear-resistant plastic paper.

The Canadian province of Alberta is a perennial favourite map title, and we are very pleased to see the updated 4th edition being released. Containing both Banff and Jasper national parks and the fabulous dinosaur museum as Drumheller, Alberta is a tourism magnet. Calgary is a major point of entry into Canada for those wishing to explore the Rocky Mountains, and camper rentals (with drop-offs in Vancouver) are very common. This double-sided map includes insets of Calgary, Edmonton (the provincial capital), Banff, Jasper (recently damaged by a wildfire), and Lake Louise.

Canada is a vast country in area; inconceivably enormous in European terms. It is best mapped as a series of regional maps and this is the first of two maps that we hope will portray the Atlantic coastline of all of North America. Side 1 concentrates on Newfoundland and Labrador, with a tiny bit of Nunuvut at the top end of the Ungava Peninsula. An inset map of St. John’s, capital of Nfld/Lab is included, as is the French Overseas Territory of St. Pierre et Miquelon. The new paved highway across Labrador is the highlight of this side of the map!

The second side of the map focusses on Nova Scotia/Cape Breton and parts of Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick, with a detailed inset of central Halifax. The former French fortress of Louisbourg is a must-see for anyone visiting Cape Breton, as are the many Loyalist towns created along the coast of Nova Scotia to house refugees fleeing turmoil in the American colonies during the Revolutionary War. A separate map concentrating on the Atlantic coastline of the USA is being prepared.

Fra ITM: 7th edition 2017. Times change, and a consensus has grown into a realization that the traditional indigenous name for the islands off BC's shore should be recognized. At the same time, the official name still recognizes the historical relationship of Queen Charlotte and the early days of British trading. We have added a new map of BC's coastline to the reverse side, covering from the US border north to Prince Rupert. As well, both sides have their own Top Attractions lists to focus attention on major sites, such as Ninstints at the southern tip of HG. As in the past, this edition is printed on tear-resistant waterproof paper. Coast in the scale 1:900.000 with inset maps of Vancouver & Victoria. Haida Gwaii in the scale 1:280.000.

The Atlantic coast of Canada is blessed with some of the earliest European settlement areas in North America. There are three Canadian provinces that have been traditionally called "maritime" - New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island. Newfoundland only became part of Canada in 1949, a century after the term Maritimes had become common usage, so is part of Atlantic Canada, but not the Maritime provinces. This double-sided regional map is great for those visiting all three provinces (ITMB also publishes separate maps of each province).

All the roads and towns are shown, as well as parks, camping areas, touristic attractions, and historic sites. The area is rich in history. Last summer, Lan and I took our two grandchildren on a month-long drive across Canada and visited Louisbourg, on Cape Breton, the French fortress that dominated French control of Quebec for many years. We also toured Green Gables, the actual farm made famous by L. M. Montgomery and her fictional Anne Shirley. Roosevelt's beloved estate is on Campobello Island, in New Brunswick. This is one of the most popular regions of North America to visit.
