«Salongen i Jerusalem» er en fortelling om maktkampen i Palestina fra første verdenskrig og frem til staten Israel ble opprettet i 1948. Begge sider gjorde opprør mot britene som styrte Palestina fra 1917. Boka forteller også en eventyrlig historie om en kristen sekt, American Colony, som slo seg ned i Jerusalem på 1880-tallet.
