Malawi
Ordinær pris 319,00 krThis new ninth edition of Bradt’s Malawi remains the only standalone practical guidebook to this magical southeast African destination produced by a mainstream publisher. Long known as the ‘warm heart of Africa’, thanks to its traditional welcome, Malawi is a small country with a big lake – accounting for around a third of its territory – and, oddly, is the first nation outside Denmark to have a Carlsberg brewery.
The guide takes you from the northern Nyika Plateau with its zebra herds to the long lake shore and the easy charm of baobab-studded Likoma Island. Heading south, you come to the capital Lilongwe and nearby Cape Maclear, a low-key resort town with excellent diving and snorkelling. From here you can travel to Liwonde National Park, famed for its abundant elephant and hippo, and the historic town of Zomba, whose high plateau is criss-crossed by hiking trails. Heading south again brings you to Mount Mulanje, the country’s highest peak at 3,002 m.
Malawi offers many outstanding adventure opportunities: kayaking on the vast lake amongst dug-out canoes; walking up the Rift Valley escarpment to Livingstonia; and watching the ‘big five’ in wonderful natural surroundings. With the reintroduction of sought-after mammals, including elephants to Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve and African wild dogs to Liwonde, plus excellent birdwatching, Malawi is a wildlife destination to savour. Also up for discovery are a resurgent music scene (including the Tumaini Festival), intriguing monuments, ancient rock art at Chongoni and compelling village culture.

UK: Orkney
Ordinær pris 279,00 krBradt's new guide to Orkney is written by experienced writer and journalist Mark Rowe, author of Bradt's hugely popular guide to the Outer Hebrides and something of a specialist in more remote parts of Scotland. Orkney comprises 70 islands, 19 inhabited, and the focus of this guide is the 13 major inhabited islands. Masses of background information is included, from geography and geology to architecture and archaeology, with significant coverage of wildlife, too, as well as all the practical details you could need: when to visit, suggested itineraries, public holidays and festivals, local culture, plus accommodation and where to eat and drink.
Wildlife lovers, walkers, bird-watchers, beach lovers, archaeology enthusiasts, genealogists, foodies, couples seeking escape and cyclists are all catered for, and this is an ideal guide for those who travel simply with curious minds to discover far-flung places of great cultural, historical and wildlife interest. Orkney is extraordinary. Home to Skara Brae, the most important Stone-Age village in northern Europe, it is also the site of the Neolithic henge of the Ring of Brodgar and Maeshowe chambered tomb, the entrance to which is aligned with the setting sun on the winter solstice.
In fact, Orkney has so many archaeological sites it has its own Neolithic Orkney World Heritage Site. Here, too, you'll find the Old Man of Hoy, a spectacular 140m-high sea stack, Scapa Flow, scene of the dramatic scuttling of the German Fleet in 1919, and Marwick Head nature reserve, the definitive wildlife location, dramatically perched on cliffs and a wonder-world for bird lovers. The archipelago also offers the world's shortest scheduled commercial flight - just 60 seconds, between Westray and Papa Westray - and is the location of the UK's most northerly distilleries.

Antarctica - A Wildlife Guide
Ordinær pris 309,00 krUpdated throughout, the 7th edition of Bradt's Antarctica: a Guide to Wildlife is the most practical guide to the flora and fauna available for those 'going south'. Celebrating the amazing and often unique species of this spectacular environment, the title features chapters on the region's famous whales and penguins, and also on lesser known species such as skuas and sheathbills, with full coverage of plumage and identification. Each chapter is accompanied by vibrant illustrations from Dafila Scott to help bring species to life.
Tony Soper's immaculate and engaging text remains the indispensible choice for the intrepid wildlife enthusiast. Antarctica's wildlife is under threat. The Southern Ocean is warming and the most obvious effect is on the continental ice shelves.
Spectacular retreats and monster carvings from the west coast of the peninsula have been seen in recent decades. Less ice means fewer krill, which depend on the ice-edge for the algae which nourish them. In turn, this will impact on seal and whale numbers.
In the case of penguins, while kings and macaronis, for instance, are doing well, the magnificently adapted and truly Antarctic species, Adelies and emperors, are in decline. In the case of emperors, maybe by as much as 50%. Bradt's Antarctica not only helps you to identify and understand species and habitats, it also explains the issues faced by this extraordinary continent, regarded by many as one of the most precious places on the planet.

Uruguay
Ordinær pris 299,00 krThis new, fully updated fourth edition of Bradt's Uruguay remains the only dedicated English-language guide to a country that's small but bursting with character. Bradt's Uruguay provides in-depth coverage of the capital Montevideo, where the once-derelict colonial Old City is undergoing a historic resurgence, plus detailed information on the UNESCO-listed coastal city of Colonia del Sacramento, as well as Punta del Este, where the Buenos Aires glitterati decamp to the beaches each summer. There's advice, too, for active travellers who can rattle their whips on cattle-ranching estancias and spin their sticks in a game of polo or two and for nature enthusiasts keen to watch wildlife in the western wetlands and birds in Cabo Polonio and Santa Teresa.
The guide also investigates the Brazilian influences behind Uruguay's music and dance, an active and upcoming food and wine scene, and the country's distinctive Afro-Uruguayan heritage, most noticeable during the world-beating 40-day Carnaval season. In addition, it covers the recent de-velopment of marijuana tours following the legalisation of marijuana. Uruguay caters for all tastes, whether you want to ride with gauchos and spend time on a tradi-tional estancia like La Sirena, visit Fray Bentos and discover the history of the town's former meat-packing plant, or take a tour of the Canelones department wineries.
Montevideo's splendid Art Deco architecture and colourful annual Carnaval are covered, and so too are the stunning sandy beaches of boho-chic fishing village Jose Ignacio and the Termas de Dayman - Uruguay's largest hot baths. Also included are San Javier, an ideal base for bird-watching trips along the Rio Uruguay and details of hiking in Quebrada de los Cuervos National Park - a subtropical canyon filled with flowers and birds. Most commonly known for winning the first soccer World Cup, electing the world's so-called 'poorest president', and raising a whole lot of beef on the pampa, Uruguay remains among South America's safest and most stable destinations, replete with interest waiting to be discovered by both leisure and adventurous travellers.

Northern Spain
Ordinær pris 309,00 krNew from Bradt is Northern Spain, the most detailed guidebook available to a unique, compelling part of Iberia - a deep dive into a hitherto under-rated region. Incisive context covers modern history and environmental, social and economic issues, enabling the reader to take well-informed decisions about how best to experience a region extending from Galicia, in Spain's far northwest, east through the Basque Country to Navarra. Northern Spain offers enormous variety.
In a single trip, you could explore Celtic heritage in Asturias, feast on Atlantic octopus in Galicia, enjoy pintxos snacks before a traditional asador barbeque in the Basque Country, surf breakers in the Bay of Biscay, walk and watch wildlife in the mountainous Picos de Europa National Park, travel along the winding Feve narrow-gauge railway or the luxurious Transcantabrica Gran Lujo train and enjoy a gentle bike ride along a 'Via Verde' (a disused railway line converted into walking and cycling routes). And northern Spain's delights do not stop there. Hikers and pilgrims alike tread along three ancient trails that comprise the Camino de Santiago, with the shrines of Santiago de Compostela as their ultimate destination.
La Rioja is Spain's most renowned wine region, where wineries include the mind-bending Marques de Riscal - designed by Frank Gehry, who designed Bilbao's Guggenheim Museum.

Catalunya & Barcelona
Ordinær pris 259,00 krBradt's newly published Catalunya & Barcelona has the most extensive coverage of any travel guidebook to the whole of this fiercely independent region (both French and Spanish sides), which is proud of its strong identity and packs a huge amount of fascination and contrast into a conveniently small area - from the Pyrenees mountains and sparkling Mediterranean coves to crisp cava and world-renowned cuisine. Although Barcelona, with its Gaudí architecture, may be the best-known destination, the rest of Catalunya generates the identity of which local residents are so proud. Although officially a semi-autonomous comunidad, Catalunya feels like a separate country - as arguably befits its history as a medieval kingdom that ruled parts of southernmost France, the Balearics and even what is now the Italian island of Sardinia.
