Det var Ulf Dalheim, mangeårig vinskribent og journalist i Adresseavisen, som i 2016 fikk den ville idéen om å ta med en gruppe fra VinPuls-klubben på en reise jorden rundt på jakt etter gode viner. Dalheim, eller Vinulf som han ofte kaller seg, har arrangert flere VinPuls-turer i Europa, men et slikt ambisiøst prosjekt blir i en helt annen liga. Smartreiser i Trondheim tente på idéen og var behjelpelig med å ordne praktiske detaljer rundt reisen. At reisen vakte interesse i VinPuls-gruppen var tydelig og da turen ble endelig annonsert tok det ikke mer enn 45 minutter før alle plassene var tatt.
Reisen startet 9. februar 2017 og gikk først til Argentina og Chile, deretter til Påskeøya og Tahiti, videre til New Zealand og Australia før den ble avsluttet i Sør-Afrika 27 dager senere.
