The Rhine River flows from the Gletch Glacier in the Swiss Alps north to central Germany and then on to Amsterdam and the North Sea. It has been a major transportation link in Europe for many centuries, with dozens of castles located at strategic points. Today, it is a peaceful touristic haven as well as a busy working river, with dozens of shallow-draft boats wending their way around countless turns in the river.
