Published to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the military mission that changed World War II, D-Day Landings: A Travel Guide to Normandy's Beaches and Battlegrounds is Bradt's new guidebook to visiting beaches, memorials, museums, battlefields and other sites associated with D-Day and the Battle of Normandy (Operation Overlord). A simple-to-follow, portable guide for independent travellers, it includes maps and driving instructions to help visitors go back in time to explore World War II history. Written by two experienced travel writers who, between them, are experts in France and military history, D-Day Landings is designed for visitors who want to see all or part of Normandy.

Covering the ground from the D-Day landing beaches (Sword, Juno, Gold, Omaha and Utah) up to Cherbourg and inland to Falaise, it encompasses every major site and a host of smaller, less well-known locations - venturing well beyond the coast to include sites associated with the capture of Caen and the closing of the Falaise Gap, which marked the end of the Overlord campaign. Although organised geographically - as befits a travel guide rather than history book - there's plenty of information on the historical context, identifying where sites fit into the timeline of the Battle of Normandy and escorting readers through the invasion in a simple, practical format. D-Day Landings aims to enhance the visitor experience by alerting readers to unexpected features, such as a German tobruk with a gun turret around which Utah Beach Museum was constructed.

Considering that Sudan is locked into an even more brutal civil war than the one besetting Israel-Hamas, this might seem like an odd time to bring out our first-ever map of Sudan and South Sudan, but it may be an important area of the world to have an updated map of, to focus on a tragedy unfolding mostly unnoticed by the world at large. More than 10,000 locals have been slaughtered since a rebel group made an abortive grasp to overthrow the current government a couple of months ago, mostly in the Darfur region.

ITMB publishes maps to encourage touristic travel, but our maps also bear witness to atrocities and natural disasters and are widely used by selected governments and humanitarian aid groups thanks to the accuracy of our artwork. Side 1 concentrates on Sudan from its disputed (and closed) border with Egypt south to a little below Khartoum, the capital. An inset map of central Khartoum is also included.

Side 2 focusses on South Sudan from its borders with CAR, Congo, Uganda, and Kenya north to the still-contested border with Sudan and the southern provinces of that country. The most dominant feature of both Sudans is the Nile River (White Branch) that flows through both countries on its way to the Mediterranean. This is the first time that South Sudan has been so intensely mapped and is a credit to Lan’s team of cartographers to portray a country carved recently out of adversity and coping with intense tribal rivalries.

Athens is one of the most ancient and historic cities in the world. The Acropolis is the mountain upon which rests the Temple Athena, often called the Parthenon as it dominates the terrain. There are two other ancient temples on the Acropolis as well. Close by is the Agora, the ancient city market centre, and at the foot of the Acropolis are two open-air theatres that date back to ancient times. Athens is also a modern city with congested roads, vibrant stores, and an excellent underground transit system. Side 2 concentrates on the peninsula (technically an island) west of Athens called the Peloponnese that is the home to Olympus, Sparta, and other former city states of legendary fame, and many of the Greek islands that are relatively close to Athens - Many of The Cyclades for example. By the shape of Greece, Delphi and much of Epirus is included. Altogether, this provides one map covering city and its hinterland for the benefit of the end user.
